Frequently Asked Questions
Mold testing is necessary to determine the presence of mold, identify the type of mold, assess its concentration, and evaluate potential health risks. It helps in detecting hidden mold growth, guiding remediation efforts, and ensuring a safe and healthy indoor environment.
Some common signs of a mold problem include a musty odor, visible mold growth, water damage, discoloration on walls or ceilings, allergic reactions, and respiratory issues. However, the only way to confirm this is through mold testing.
There are various types of mold testing, including air sampling, surface sampling, bulk sampling, and tape lift sampling. Each method has its own advantages and limitations, and the choice depends on the specific situation and objectives of the testing.
While DIY mold testing kits are available, it is generally recommended to hire a professional mold inspector or an accredited laboratory for accurate and reliable results. Professionals have the necessary expertise, experience, and equipment to conduct thorough testing and interpret the findings correctly.
The cost of mold testing can vary depending on several factors, such as the size of the property, the number of samples needed, the type of testing method used, and the location. It is best to contact local mold testing services or laboratories to get estimates based on your specific requirements.
The duration of mold testing depends on the size of the property, the number of samples, and the testing method used. Typically, it can take a few hours to a few days to complete the testing process. The turnaround time for receiving the test results from the laboratory may vary as well.
Mold testing itself does not pose significant health risks. However, during the testing process, there is a possibility of disturbing mold spores, which can cause allergic reactions or respiratory issues in sensitive individuals. It is important to follow safety precautions and use proper protective equipment during testing.
If mold is detected during testing, it is advisable to consult a professional mold remediation specialist. They can assess the extent of the problem, provide guidance on the appropriate remediation steps, and help prevent further mold growth.
To prevent mold growth, it is essential to control moisture levels in your home. Ensure proper ventilation, address water leaks promptly, maintain low indoor humidity (ideally below 50%), use dehumidifiers if necessary, and promptly dry any areas affected by water damage.
Mold testing may or may not be covered by insurance, as it depends on your specific policy and the circumstances surrounding the testing. It is recommended to contact your insurance provider to understand the coverage and any requirements for reimbursement.

- Test for Toxic Materials & Mold It gave me peace of mind after we had some water damage from a storm and there was a delay in getting my new roof. Gratefully the air quality was very good. - I'm so glad I contacted Lance at LoneStar Mold Testing. Like so many people, This was the first time I've had to look for and subsequently hire someone to test for mold. In the process of refinancing my house, the appraiser for the mortgage company thought that there might be mold in the walls. I tried explaining that what they were seeing was a discoloration where my wife had tried to remove old wallpaper as she had gouged the sheetrock that left a rough patch that DID look awful... but, "it wasn't mold," I explained. The mortgage company had already made up its "mind" and wanted a mold test done.
I contacted 3 companies as is standard practice when looking for bids. Lance of LoneStar called me almost immediately after I'd posted a request for bids on HomeAdvisor. The other two waited until the next day to call or respond. Lance's message seemed sincere and that he'd answer any questions I might have. While the other two encouraged me to call them back for a bid, Lance's message was more reassuring. In the end, I chose LoneStar.
Lance DID answer my questions. all of them. I had several and he patiently answered them. He told me exactly what he was going to do as required by standard practices and well as the law. (As he said, "It's nothing personal. It's because I have my license on the line.") We set up a time for the inspection.
He was on time and professional - and friendly. I ushered him in and we engaged in a little small talk. I showed him the spot on the wall that drew the attention of the appraiser. He just shook his head and with a small smile of self-assurance said, "This'll only take a few minutes."
Indeed it took only a few minutes to get his samples.
The cost was reasonable and, like many self-employed pros, he preferred cash and gave me a small discount because he didn't have to pay the credit card fee.
Our appointment was about noon so I presumed that I'd get the results in a day or two because it was already getting late in the day and he'd told me that he had another one or two appointments later in the day. I was happily surprised that I received the results by about 7 o'clock that evening! I was able to file the pdf report with the mortgage company that same day which allowed me to close a day earlier!
If I need a mold inspector again, I'll call LoneStar Mold Testing with Lance. As he left my house he commented, "I hope I don't have to see you again . . . not because I don't like you or wouldn't want to come back over. I just hope you don't have a mold issue to deal with."read moreread lessTest for Toxic Materials & Mold I'm so glad I contacted Lance at LoneStar Mold Testing.
